My Thoughts in the Puregold Issue – Stop Overthinking It

DO NOT OVERTHINK IT

Today’s post is in response to Bilyonario’s article of Puregold, a big Filipino supermarket chain, requiring their cashiers and clerks to have at least a college degree.

And this comment from a Netizen:

Please forgive the spelling errors.

My response: This has nothing to do with HR’s incompetence.

It has nothing to do that a high school grad can capably do the work.

1. It is primarily about MANAGEMENT PREROGATIVE (The right to choose) whomever applicant they wish to let them work for them.

Since degree discrimination in the Philippines is NOT illegal, this is actually a good thing.

2. Huwag nating masyadong babaan ang tingin natin sa cashier and baggers.

For one, it’s not uncommon for the rank and file or the baggers to be promoted to higher levels of management because they are capable.

Cashiers also handle huge amounts of cash since so sa pagbibilang, isang transaction lang, average na nating ₱5,000 for one cart.

In short, we will NEVER undermine the cashier position as mababa.

Cashiering is an important job.

The problem is, many people think it’s a lowly job. Pero sa totoo lang, napaka importante, napaka galing dapat ang isang cashier kasi they’re handling hundreds of thousands of pesos in a daily shift.

It’s akin to a bank teller —- HINDI PWEDE MAGKAMALI. And pag may mali or kulang yan sa pera, charge lahat sa tao.

Sino ang magbabayad if the family is not that financially capable?

Note: It is LEGAL for companies to deduct the actual losses from the employees’ salary after due process, if it’s proven such loss is a a direct result of his/her negligence.

High school grads usually work dahil sa financial difficulties. Sa totoo lang, studying in university is a luxury, kasi kailangan, may ibang nagpapakain sa pamilya.

So if ganoon na ang situation, tapos fully charge pa ang kulang sa pera ng cashier, paano mabubuhay ang pamilya?

3. Feeling ni Puregold, napakaraming applicants sila for positions so they can be more discretionary in picking new hires.

Puregold is known to be a fair, reasonable and decent employer. Many of their employees work there for decades.

Since Puregold has confidence they are good employers, they can also ask for a bit more requirements in their applicants.

4. May chance naman to work for Puregold – IF you want.

Kung gusto talaga sa Puregold, then get a degree. Marami rin diyan na hindi mahal. May scholarships din. If gugustuhin, kaya.

If ayaw sa iyo, bakit magpipilit. Again, why want to be with someone who does not want you?

Huwag mag paka martyr.

That’s why it’s management prerogative.

There are many fishes in the sea.

Why magpipilit?

Hope this helps!

  1. Agree with this. They don’t see the bigger picture.
