MY TOP 20 LESSONS IN HR FOR 2020:
It’s almost the new year! To end the year with a bang, here are my top 20 lessons in HR that I learned this 2020:
1. When government puts everyone on lockdown, stop stressing and being depressed. Walang pakialam ang government kung depressed ka. Hindi dadagdag ang pera mo kung nakasimangot ka.
Instead, enjoy the long-earned rest, quality time with family, and new hobbies.
2. When government gives an announcement, read the original document carefully. Huwag tira lang ng tira based on headlines. Pag naintindihan mo yung regulations, masmadaling mag operate ng negosyo and mag manage ng tao.
3. Before you release any plans —- WFH or Financial support —- ALWAYS think of the after effects. Dapat laging may PLAN and RULES para klaro ang lahat.
Pre empt the problems and set the rules before you make any announcement. Mas madaling mapasunod ang tao BEFORE you implement ang gracia, kaysa after.
4. If you want your staff to stay home during lockdown, set the rules and corresponding penalties BEFOREHAND.
Huwag kang walang na dictate na rules and penalty tapos later magagalit ka kung bakit lumalabas ang tao mo. Hindi common sense yan. Your staff are not mindreaders.
5. If you’re going to give any ayuda, make sure you include all conditions on the financial assistance BEFORE you give it, and may kasulatan kayo on what you expect from them in return.
While ayuda is help, it’s not free. Pag ayaw nila ng conditions, then huwag mong ibigay ang ayuda.
6. Ayuda means “financial assistance.” It’s not mandated by law.
If you see your people need help, help them kung ano ang kaya. But if they are DEMANDING and sulking for you to help, it’s your choice NOT to help.
Don’t help people who pressure who bully you. Help those you know who are truly in need and appreciates what you’re doing.
7. If your money is low kasi hindi ka nakasavings, don’t blame your employer or the government. It’s the employer’s job to pay you on time and well IF you work. It’s YOUR job to save for your family.
Kaya hindi pwedeng idemand ang ayuda. Kung mayroon, great. If wala, ok lang din. Kasi may ipon ka.
8. This year placed a microscope on the status of your personal and professional relationships.
Pag madalas kayo nagaaway ng asawa mo due to COVID-19, matagal na yung resentment na nakatago at ngayon lang lumabas kasi nagsasama sama na kayo.
If galit ka sa employer mo and lagi mong pinagdududahan before COVID-19, matagal na may kulo ng dugo na ngayon lang lumabas.
The good becomes more good, and the bad becomes more bad. Lumalabas na ang katotohanan sa oras ng kahirapan.
9. That said, make sure you’re employed in a “good” company. Pag nagaaway away kayo ng employer or ng employee mo this 2020, baka masmagandang mag break up na lang kayo.
There are still many other fishes in the sea. Hindi naman kayo stuck sa isa’t isa.
10. If may good news, announce on social media. If may bad news, companies should try their best to talk and explain the bad news to the staff one by one. Masmaganda na galing sa iyo kaysa mag chismisan sila. And trust me, they will chismis. Unahan mo na ang chismis.
11. If pinapareport ka ng employer, please report.
Trabaho is trabaho.
Mahirap kumuha ng pera galing sa bato. If you start reporting, kahit flexible work arrangement lang, dadagdag din ang araw ng pagpasok and pasahod mo kasi yung iba, hindi pumasok.
Kaya pumasok ka. Kasi once na pasok ka na, hindi mo na kailangang mangulit kung kailan ka papasok if ready ka na.
12. If you moved locations during ECQ and you find it inconvenient to go to work, then it’s not your employer’s problem kung bakit ka hindi makareport. If nakalipat ka palayo, makakalipat ka ding palapit.
Your office did not move.
So if you can’t report to work, maghanap ka na lang ng ibang work.
13. Employers should be understanding pero also be knowledgeable. Pandemic or not, always follow due process. Huwag nang antayin na nag aaway away bago mag NTE.
Always be consistent with your documentation. Kasi later, it’s that documentation that would exonerate you.
14. Prioritize Employee Engagement: If nagaaway away ang mga tao sa company, nobody is working. Nobody is selling. If nobody is selling, no money is coming in, the entire company will go bankrupt.
Find out the core of the problem and solve it. If may trouble maker, tutukan. If may issue, ayusin agad. Huwag patagalin ang issue, kasi hindi healthy yan sa organization.
15. If may trabaho and ok naman kayo ni boss, huwag munang mag resign. Remember, it’s COVID-19 season. Companies are retrenching. People are in FWA. Baka kailangang magka negative RT-PCR bago kang tanggapin sa trabaho. Pera is pera. Mahal mag apply ngayon. Next year ka na lang mag jump ship kasi mahirap ma tengga.
16. Pag may conflict sa employer, huwag mag beast mode agad agad. Tanungin mo muna kung ano ang nangyari, then find out kung nasa tama si company or not. Pag hinde, follow up nicely.
Mas madali mo ma approve ang request mo if you ask NICELY instead of sulking, stomping your feet or thrashing on the floor. And while you have rights, may rights din ang kausap mo. And your pagsisimangot will not make your approval go faster. Hindi pa ba tayo natuto sa living in the Philippines?
17. That said, huwag matakot kay DOLE or Tulfo just because nagbanta si staff if alam naman nating ginagawa natin ang tama and dumadaan tayo sa due process.
Napakahaba na ang pila sa Tulfo. And may tamang proseso din sa DOLE. While papakinggan ng DOLE ang hinanakit ng employees, may proper due process pa din sila at hiningi ng ebidensya. Wala nang masyadong mediation ngayon where staff can wrangle an easy payoff. Direct na tayo sa position paper, which you need to both hire a lawyer for. Due to COVID-19, lahat ay dadaanin sa documentation so make sure, documented lahat.
18. Likewise, if it’s due the person, dapat bayaran din ng company yung dapat bayaran. Huwag takasan ang bayaran if the staff EARNED IT.
Always act in good faith. Huwag lokohin ang empleyado. While it’s easier to try to takas payment, think of what type of integrity you’re showing the staff you’ve left behind. Treat your staff fairly and well. If dapat bayaran, bayaran mo na. Don’t use the pandemic as an excuse not to pay. Alam naman natin na may pera si company kung gusto lang magbayad.
Pag you don’t act in good faith, huwag Kang magreklamo na stressed ka dahil marami kang DOLE cases. Kahit anong sabihin mo, hassle din yan.
19. Why did you leave your last job?” —- Best question to ask by recruiters this 2020. If the staff AWOL’d or immediately resigned without proper turnover, alam na.
Kaya for employees, while it’s your right to resign, please resign properly and turnover for 30 days para walang sabit sa clearance.
20. You make your year. Gusto mo bang maging nega or positive?
If you choose to be depressed and pity yourself, ikaw lang ang nagsasakit sa sarili mo. But if you choose to look at the positive, you will find so many things to be thankful about. Like for example, buhay ka pa diba?
